“A NATIONAL DISGRACE”: Judge Faces Backlash Over Lenient Sentence for Brett Kavanaugh’s Attempted Assassin

A federal judge is under intense scrutiny after delivering what critics are calling an “unbelievably lenient” sentence to the man who attempted to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Federal Judge Deborah Boardman, appointed by President Biden, sentenced Nicholas Roske to eight years in prison—far less than the 30 years prosecutors had recommended. The ruling has ignited a political firestorm, drawing outrage from legal experts, lawmakers, and citizens who say the punishment does not match the severity of the crime.

Roske was arrested outside Kavanaugh’s Maryland home in June 2022, armed with a handgun, ammunition, a knife, and burglary tools. According to authorities, he had traveled across the country with the intention of killing the Supreme Court justice. His arrest came amid heightened tensions following the Court’s leaked draft opinion on Roe v. Wade, which placed Kavanaugh at the center of national controversy.

Prosecutors argued that Roske’s planned attack was premeditated and politically motivated, making it one of the most serious threats ever directed at a sitting justice. They pushed for a three-decade sentence to reflect the gravity of the attempted assassination and deter future political violence.

However, Judge Boardman ultimately handed down a significantly lighter sentence, citing Roske’s lack of prior criminal history and other mitigating factors. Critics argue that this decision sets a dangerous precedent and undermines public trust in the justice system.

Conservative commentators, Republican lawmakers, and legal analysts quickly condemned the ruling, calling it “a national disgrace” and accusing the judge of political bias. Many argue that if the target had been a liberal justice or political figure, the punishment would have been far more severe.

The sentencing has reignited debates about judicial impartiality, security for Supreme Court justices, and the politicization of the legal system. As backlash mounts, the case is likely to remain a flashpoint in national political discourse.
