A Love Story Cut Short: Engaged Couple Among 15 Killed in Heartbreaking Lucknow Inferno

LUCKNOW, INDIA — Just last week, the families of Neelesh Kumar and Anamika Samant were sitting together, exchanging laughter and mapping out the details of a dream wedding. Anamika’s parents had traveled all the way from West Bengal to Lucknow to finalize the upcoming nuptials.

On Monday afternoon, June 22, 2026 those dreams of a shared future evaporated in a matter of twenty minutes.

Neelesh and Anamika were among the 15 people tragically killed when a catastrophic fire tore through a three-storey building in Lucknow’s Aliganj area. Instead of preparing for a wedding, their shattered families are now arranging a joint funeral.

The young couple worked together at Head Hopper Studio, a 3D animation and game asset production center located on the second floor of the commercial complex.

The fire broke out around 2:30 PM on the ground floor, reportedly originating from an air-conditioning short circuit inside a basement pet shop and veterinary clinic. Fueled by highly combustible materials, toxic black smoke and fierce flames rapidly surged upward, cutting off the building's sole entry and exit point.

Witnesses described a scene of absolute horror. While some students and employees managed to escape by smashing windowpanes or leaping from the upper floors, others were entirely cut off by the thick smoke.

According to emergency responders, several victims—potentially including the young couple—locked themselves inside washrooms in a desperate, final attempt to shield themselves from the suffocating fumes. Ultimately, medical officials confirmed that all 15 victims lost their lives due to asphyxiation from the dense smoke.

As Lucknow mourns its worst fire tragedy in recent years, grief has quickly turned into public outrage over glaring safety violations.

Preliminary investigations revealed a deadly chain of systemic failures that turned the building into a trap. Originally approved strictly for residential use, the structure had been operating illegally as a commercial complex since 2014, completely lacking dedicated emergency exits.

When the fire broke out, the main staircase was quickly engulfed, and a biometric thumb-impression lock at the animation studio's entrance remained sealed after the power failed, stealing vital seconds from those trying to flee. Compounding the tragedy, authorities discovered that a demolition order issued for unauthorized construction in 2016 had been mysteriously revoked less than two months later.

In the wake of the tragedy, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath cut short his official visits to personally monitor the situation. The state government has suspended four municipal and fire officials for negligence and an FIR has been registered against six individuals, including the building's owners.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Adityanath have expressed profound grief over the incident, announcing a combined ex-gratia compensation of ₹7 lakh for the families of each deceased victim.

Yet, for the families of Neelesh and Anamika, no amount of compensation can fill the void. A community is left grieving for 15 young lives—mostly students and artists aged 22 to 27—whose bright futures and unwritten love stories were ruthlessly cut short by administrative neglect.
