A Flight That Began in Austin and Ended in a Crater

There are flights that begin in the ordinary manner—a departure from Austin, a course set for the Bahamas, the quiet confidence of a machine climbing through thirty-five thousand feet of cold, thin air. And then there are the moments when the ordinary becomes something else entirely, when the instruments tell a story the pilot did not intend and the sky stops being a place of passage.

A Learjet 60 carrying nine people crashed into a residential neighborhood in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday afternoon, killing everyone on board . The aircraft had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed to the Bahamas when it went down near Greenacres, about seven miles southwest of West Palm Beach . Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy called it a "horrific tragedy," and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, speaking at the scene, described what he had seen: "It looked like a missile going down and left a big crater on the side of the road" .

The final minutes of the flight are preserved in air traffic control recordings. The pilot reported light, clear ice that was manageable and moderate turbulence, then requested to climb another two thousand feet . Moments later, the situation deteriorated. The plane entered a steep dive—first ten thousand feet per minute, then twenty thousand, then thirty thousand—speeding beyond its design limits . The pilot declared an emergency. "We're descending 8,000—mayday, mayday—we're descending 10,000 feet per minute," the pilot radioed. Then, more urgently: "We are in an overspeed condition descending 20,000 feet per minute." And finally, the plainest statement of what was about to happen: "We're going to crash into the ground" .

National Transportation Safety Board member Tom Chapman said Monday that investigators found evidence the aircraft began breaking up before impact, and that debris could be spread far from the crash site . Aviation safety expert Jeff Guzzetti, a former NTSB and FAA investigator, suggested that key components of the jet's tail may have been lost during the turbulence or the dive. "If that happens you cannot control an airplane at that point," he said. "And that very well could explain the missile-like profile just before it hit the ground" .

The victims have not been officially identified, but the family of twenty-year-old Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras confirmed she was one of the pilots. She earned her pilot's license in 2023 while a senior at West Boca Raton Community High School, before she could legally drive . Her license showed she had the rating to fly that model of Learjet but not to be in command of the flight .

No one on the ground was killed, though one person in a vehicle near the crash site suffered leg wounds . About six hundred people were evacuated from a nearby mobile home community while investigators worked, and the road where the jet struck will remain closed for an extended period . The NTSB is leading the investigation, with the FAA assisting. Chapman said the agency will not speculate about the cause. "Our mission is to understand not just what happened, but why it happened, and to recommend changes to prevent it from happening again" .
