A Family Returned Home to a Scene They Cannot Forget

There are neighborhoods that exist in the quiet rhythms of family life—school runs, evening meals, children playing in front yards. Wollert, on Melbourne’s northern outskirts, is one of those places. On Thursday afternoon, that quiet was broken by gunshots, and the community is now grappling with a violence that police believe was targeted.

Ali Albadri, 42, was found dead at his home on Gypsum Drive around 5:30 p.m., shot multiple times in what investigators suspect was a gangland execution . His wife and children returned to the property shortly after the shooting and were described by police as “absolutely distraught” .

Detective Acting Inspector Paul Scarlett said Albadri was known to police and had links to organized crime extending beyond Victoria . CCTV footage obtained from a neighboring street captured the sound of gunshots and showed a man picking up what appeared to be a black bag before fleeing into a park. Two men were seen running toward a waiting car just before the shots rang out .

“This is obviously an area full of young families who just want to live in peace and feel safe in their home,” Scarlett said. “The home we are talking about is a family home, and yesterday a man was shot to death at that address” . He described the shooting as “abhorrent” and said the homicide squad would do everything possible to bring those responsible before the courts .

No arrests have been made. Police have spoken to the occupants of a brown Commodore seen in the area and do not believe they were involved . A large crime scene remained in place on Friday morning, and neighbors described the shock of witnessing violence in a place they thought was safe. “It’s never happened before, we couldn’t sleep the whole night,” one local told The Age .

The investigation continues, and police are appealing for information. For the family who returned home to find their world changed, and for the neighbors who now lock their doors with a new awareness, the search for answers is only beginning.
