In the quiet town of Towanda, Pennsylvania, a family's three-week stay at a Poconos resort might have seemed, from the outside, like an early Christmas gift to a three-year-old boy. The extended vacation at Great Wolf Lodge, a place of water slides and family laughter, ended instead in a hotel room where a father and his son were found dead from stab wounds. Now, the suspect's stepmother says the trip was financed in a way the family found "odd"—by draining her husband's 401(k) retirement account.
April Thetga, stepmother of 27-year-old Metallica Rose Harrison, told the New York Post that Harrison tapped her husband Charles's retirement account to pay for the three-week trip, plus a kitchen remodel and other expenses. "It was definitely odd, but they'd taken their 401(k) out," Thetga said. "There was nothing we could do about that".
Thetga said she did not know whether the couple had borrowed against the account or withdrawn the money outright. She described the family as finding the sudden financial move unusual but not alarming enough to raise major red flags. Relatives even shared a cheerful video call with Harrison the day before the killings. "She had called and we're video chatting, and then she says she loved us very much, just like she normally would," Thetga recalled.
The next day, police responded to a 911 call from Harrison at the resort. According to an affidavit, she told the dispatcher she needed help dying and said, "My husband and son are already gone in the bed in the living room. They're already gone, I'm sorry." Officers found Charles Harrison with multiple stab wounds to the chest and three-year-old Tristan with a single stab wound. Harrison was found with self-inflicted injuries.
During transport to the hospital, Harrison told EMS personnel that she was "not supposed to be here" and said, "Every day I work so hard. To be the best person, the best mother, the best wife. It wasn't supposed to end like this. I was supposed to have my happy family".
A search warrant later revealed that Charles's mother and sister told investigators Harrison was "dominant" and "controlling" and had isolated Charles and the child from his family over the past three years. They said she appeared resentful toward her son and had said she never wanted to become pregnant, complaining that the child took away one-on-one time with her husband.
Investigators seized ten teal knives from the family's Towanda home, including two inside a knife block. Police had previously recovered two teal-handled knives at the resort that Great Wolf Lodge staff confirmed were not hotel property. Also seized were financial records, journals, sealed envelopes, a laptop, and a safe.
Thetga described Charles Harrison as a devoted husband and father. "He was a fantastic husband. She definitely got lucky when it came to him. He just was good. He was a good father. I don't think I've ever even seen him fight," she said. "Absolutely it was a loving family. We're just as shocked as everybody else. We're not evil people. We want answers. They were always happy".
Metallica Harrison faces two counts of criminal homicide. Bail was denied, and her preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 21. The Monroe County District Attorney has described the incident as a "violent domestic tragedy" with no ongoing threat to the public.
