A Decade to the Moon? SpaceX Chief Shares Long-Term Vision for Permanent Presence

In the long arc of space exploration, bold timelines often serve as both ambition and signal. Elon Musk said SpaceX aims to build a self-growing, self-sustaining city on the Moon within the next decade, a vision that extends the company’s long-term goal of establishing human settlements beyond Earth.

The concept reflects Musk’s broader philosophy that humanity should become a multi-planetary species. While much of SpaceX’s public focus has centered on Mars, the Moon has increasingly emerged as a nearer-term testing ground for technologies related to life support, construction, energy systems, and transportation in extreme environments.

A self-growing lunar city, as described by Musk, would rely on systems capable of expanding with minimal direct human intervention. Such an approach would likely depend on automation, robotics, and the use of local materials—often referred to as in-situ resource utilization—to reduce the cost and complexity of transporting large volumes of supplies from Earth.
