A cruel nickname cannot answer the questions voters are asking.

In the theater of American politics, language is often the first instrument of power. It can lift, persuade, and unite—or it can wound, distract, and divide. This week, the president chose the latter, using a slur against a Senate candidate in a state where the race has grown closer than many expected.

President Donald Trump used an anti-transgender slur three times in a Truth Social post attacking Dr. Annie Andrews, the Democratic nominee for Senate in South Carolina, while urging voters to support Republican Sen. Darline Graham . Andrews is a pediatrician and mother of three who is not transgender

“Annie ‘Trannie’ Andrews is running against our wonderful Darline Graham,” Trump wrote, going on to describe Andrews as “not for South Carolina” and urging voters to reject her at the polls . He also claimed she supports “Transgender for Everyone, Open Borders, Defunding the Police, High Taxes, a Weak Military” and would “take your guns away” .

Andrews did not directly address the slur in her response. “As a mom and a pediatrician, I’m in this race to fight for my patients, my three kids, and South Carolina,” she said. “I’m going to work with anyone to put South Carolina first, because lowering costs and making life better for families across our state is going to take all of us working together” .

The remarks drew criticism from across the political spectrum. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called the attacks “despicable,” while former South Carolina Governor David Beasley, a Republican, wrote that the language was “abhorrent” and that “elections don’t have to be about cruelty and lies” . The Human Rights Campaign condemned the post as “the sad, disgusting, pathetic diatribes of a lame duck president with record-low approvals” .

The context of the race matters. Graham was appointed to the Senate seat after the death of her brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, in July 2026. She won a competitive primary runoff by nearly five percentage points, and Trump’s rally before that runoff helped boost her candidacy . But recent signals suggest the general election may be more competitive than initially expected. The Senate Leadership Fund is investing $5 million in the state as an “insurance policy,” and the Cook Political Report shifted its rating from “Solid Republican” to “Likely Republican” .

Andrews has positioned herself as a pragmatic voice focused on healthcare costs and family finances. She has said she does not support gender-affirming surgery for minors and does not support “biological men playing in women’s sports,” positions that place her at odds with some in her party but closer to the mainstream of South Carolina’s electorate .

Trump is tentatively scheduled to campaign for Graham in South Carolina later this month . For now, the race continues—and the language used to fight it will be remembered long after the votes are counted.
