A Candidate Speaks What Was Meant to Silence Her

There is a particular courage required to speak aloud what was done in darkness—to take an experience that was meant to silence and shame, and to place it into the public record where it will be examined, questioned, and inevitably politicized. Bernadette Greene-Placentia, a Democratic congressional candidate in Arizona, has chosen that courage.

Greene-Placentia, who is running against Republican incumbent Rep. Abraham Hamadeh in Arizona's 8th Congressional District, told the Phoenix New Times that she was attacked in August while repairing a campaign sign in a parking lot in Sun City, about 16 miles outside Phoenix . She said she was hit from behind and knocked unconscious. When she woke, one of two men was raping her .

She reported the assault to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office on August 31, two weeks after it occurred . A spokesman for the sheriff's office confirmed the investigation is ongoing and declined to share further information .

Greene-Placentia said she believes the attack may have been politically motivated. According to her account, the main attacker called her a "Democratic b—h" during the assault . A second attacker said "not even worth it" before walking away, she recalled . In an interview with KNXV-TV, she said she does not know for certain whether the attack was political. "Maybe I was recognized, but I think it was probably a crime of opportunity," she said. "I just don't have a way of knowing" .

Greene-Placentia, a former long-haul trucker who spent 27 years on the road, described the aftermath of the assault as leaving her bruised and with gaps in her memory. "The first couple of weeks after, I was very angry," she said. "After being a long-haul trucker for 27 years, across 4 million miles, I had taken care of myself, and for something like this to happen so close to home, I was just furious" .

Her campaign said it cannot afford additional security but is taking extra precautions . In an interview with CNN, Greene-Placentia said she decided to come forward now to give a voice to other victims, acknowledging, "It's hard for women to come forward" .

Her opponent, Rep. Hamadeh, issued a statement calling the allegations disturbing. "I have read the disturbing story and call upon authorities to investigate these serious allegations thoroughly, including finding all possible camera footage of the time and place in order to prosecute the crime to the fullest extent of the law," he said. "No American should become a victim of a crime in their own community" .

Arizona Democrats responded with expressions of support. Sen. Ruben Gallego said he was "absolutely heartbroken" and that "we cannot tolerate political or sexual violence in any form" . Rep. Adelita Grijalva called the assault "absolutely horrific" .

The investigation continues. Greene-Placentia continues her campaign. And the question of what happened in that parking lot in Sun City—whether it was a crime of opportunity or something more calculated—remains unanswered.
