A Bridge Builder’s Triumph: Bronchtein’s Role in France’s Recognition of a Palestinian State

In a quiet Paris apartment lined with books and memories, Ofer Bronchtein watched, tears in his eyes, as Emmanuel Macron addressed the United Nations General Assembly in September. The room, he later said, was filled with applause — a moment Bronchtein had long dreamed of.

Bronchtein’s journey feels like a river slowly carving its path through rock — shapeless at first, but persistent, tugging at barriers until finally, in Macron’s historic statement, something gave way. Born in Beersheba, Israel, and later holding French citizenship, Bronchtein has spent decades building bridges between Israelis and Palestinians.

His influence on Macron did not come from formal office but from a relationship forged over time. Their bond reportedly began around 2019 via a mutual friend, and deepened during Macron’s trip to Jerusalem in 2020, where Bronchtein served as a Hebrew translator and shared late-night conversations with the president in Ramallah.

Macron, Bronchtein says, once told him, “When the time comes …” — and Bronchtein’s mission was simple yet profound: to show that a sovereign Palestinian state, recognized by France, was not just symbolic, but a foundational step toward peace.

Bronchtein did not ask for money or title. He chairs the International Forum for Peace, a non-profit, and says his only condition in advising Macron was a “direct line” to the president. Through thousands of conversations, with people on both sides of the conflict, he developed what he calls a “toolbox” of ideas — urging Arab states to normalize with Israel, Israel to recognize a Palestinian state, and France to lead international recognition.

For Bronchtein, the September UN moment was more than diplomatic theatre: it was the culmination of decades of advocacy. He has often framed his work as a personal moral mission. He has told Macron that had Palestinians possessed sovereignty before October 7, 2023, the tragic attack might not have occurred.

But his road was not unchallenged. His activism, rooted in both Israeli and Palestinian circles, has drawn harsh criticism — and even death threats. Still, he declined Macron’s offer of a security detail, believing deeply in the power of peaceful dialogue.

Now, as France assumes a more active role in Middle East diplomacy, Bronchtein presses on. He believes Paris must not simply celebrate recognition, but help build the practical institutions, democratic norms, and civil society capacity for a viable, demilitarized Palestinian state.
