A Bag, a Door, and the Fragility of a Commute

There is a particular kind of tragedy that lives in the ordinary moments of a commute—the familiar rhythm of doors opening, passengers stepping out, a train pulling away. On Monday evening at the Utica Avenue station in Brooklyn, that rhythm broke. A 57-year-old man named Yaw Boahene was exiting a northbound A train when his bag became caught in the closing doors. The train began to move. He was pulled backward, dragged between the cars, and onto the tracks.

The call came in around 5:50 p.m., during the evening rush. Police arrived to find Boahene unconscious and unresponsive on the roadbed. Emergency medical services pronounced him dead at the scene. The city’s medical examiner will determine the official cause of death, and the investigation is ongoing.

A witness who was on the train described the terror of the moment. “His bag got caught in the door and the train just kept moving,” she told ABC7 New York. “I didn’t see the man for a while and the train kept moving and you could sort of hear the sounds and there were people screaming within the train and then also people screaming on the platform”. She said the conductor did not appear to notice at first and that she called 911 because no MTA staff were present at the station.

The death was not deemed criminal. Police initially described the bag as a backpack but later clarified it was a blue plastic shopping bag. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority called it a “terrible accident” but declined to say whether any safety mechanisms could have prevented it.

Dragging deaths are rare but not unprecedented in New York’s subway system. In 2022, a 20-year-old man was killed when his backpack or clothing became stuck in the doors at the Columbus Circle station. In 2016, a 51-year-old man was dragged to his death at the Kew Gardens-Union Turnpike station. The incidents share a common thread: a moment of inattention, a bag caught in the wrong place, a train that did not stop in time.

Boahene was a Brooklyn resident. His identity was released by police, but little else is known about him publicly. He was exiting a train, carrying a shopping bag, at the end of a Monday workday. The investigation will continue, as these investigations do, with a report that will establish the sequence of events and likely conclude what witnesses already know: that a man died because a bag he was carrying became trapped in a door that closed at the wrong moment.

The MTA has not announced any changes to procedures or equipment in response to the death. The station at Utica Avenue reopened after the investigation, and the A train resumed its schedule. For the thousands who pass through that station every day, the memory of Monday evening will fade, as commuter memories do. For those who knew Yaw Boahene, it will not.
