MOSSBURN, New Zealand — An intensive aerial operation is underway in Southland as a fleet of seven helicopters equipped with monsoon buckets battles a fast-moving vegetation fire threatening the rugged margins of Takitimu Forest near Mossburn.
Emergency services were alerted to the blaze in the vicinity of Mount Hamilton and Centre Hill, just off the State Highway corridor connecting Mossburn to Te Anau. Fueled by dry conditions and driven by severe northwesterly winds gusting across exposed ridges, the fire quickly took hold in the steep terrain.
Due to the remote and treacherous nature of the landscape, ground crews have been unable to safely reach the primary flames directly. Instead, Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) commanders made the tactical decision to mount an all-out aerial assault, deploying seven helicopters to douse the blaze from above.
"Because of the steep, inaccessible terrain and volatile wind conditions, this is primarily an aerial containment operation," said a FENZ operational spokesperson. Ground crews and monitoring units remain stationed along nearby access roads and perimeter zones to manage edge safety and keep track of the fire's behavior.
A primary focus for the responding chopper crews has been establishing defense lines around critical regional infrastructure. Two key telecommunications towers positioned on nearby elevated ground faced potential threat from the advancing fire front. Water drops have been prioritized to cool the surrounding vegetation and prevent the flames from encroaching on the facilities.
Authorities confirmed that there is no immediate threat to homes or residential communities in the area. Gale-force northwesterly winds sweeping through the Southland region have complicated efforts, forcing pilots to navigate strong turbulence while targeting precision water drops over burning scrub and dry grass.
Fire and Emergency NZ continues to urge the public and motorists traveling along the nearby state highways to avoid the area where possible to allow emergency vehicles and support crews clear access.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation as response team's work through the afternoon to establish control boundaries before weather conditions shift.
