59-Year-Old Man Killed as Heavy Rain Triggers Deadly Landslide in Baglung

BAGLUNG, NEPAL — A 59-year-old man was killed on Saturday after continuous heavy rainfall triggered a massive landslide, burying part of his residential home in Tarakhola Rural Municipality-5, Dhasmar, Baglung district.

The relentless monsoon downpours over the past 24 hours caused a steep hillside above the village to collapse, sending a torrent of mud, rocks, and debris crashing directly into the rear section of the house. The victim was inside when the landslide struck, trapping him instantly under the collapsed structure and fallen debris.

Local residents rushed to the scene immediately following the collapse to begin digging through the mud before security personnel, including Nepal Police and Armed Police Force units, arrived to assist in the emergency response.

Despite the rapid mobilization of locals and rescue personnel, the victim was recovered from beneath the rubble with severe injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after being extracted. Authorities confirmed that other family members present in the home managed to escape to safety with minor injuries.

Local officials have issued warnings to residents living on unstable slopes and near riverbanks across Baglung and surrounding hill districts as continuous rains increase the risk of further slope failures and flash floods. Emergency management teams remain on high alert across the province to respond to potential secondary landslides as wet weather persists.

District authorities have coordinated with local government representatives to provide immediate relief assistance and temporary shelter arrangements for the displaced family members. Local community organizations have also stepped in to deliver essential supplies, food, and clothing as the damaged home remains structurally unsafe and vulnerable to further ground movement.

Meanwhile, environmental experts and regional infrastructure agencies have reiterated calls for long-term geological assessments across Nepal's hill settlements. Unplanned rural road construction combined with increasingly intense monsoon cycles has drastically heightened slope instability in recent years, prompting urgent demands for improved early warning systems and sustainable land-management strategies to safeguard vulnerable hill communities.
