London, United Kingdom— A 51-year-old moped rider was killed on Friday after a crash on Lea Bridge Road in Hackney, East London, police said.
The collision happened in the morning rush period. The moped was travelling east along Lea Bridge Road when it collided with another vehicle. Emergency services were called within minutes.
London Ambulance Service crews arrived to find the rider with critical injuries. Despite efforts at the scene, the man was pronounced dead. The other driver stopped and remained at the scene.
“The rider of the moped, aged 51, was pronounced dead at the scene,” the Metropolitan Police said in a statement. “We are working to inform next of kin and are appealing for witnesses.”
Lea Bridge Road was closed between Chatsworth Road and Upper Clapton Road. Buses were diverted. Forensic officers examined the road surface and the damaged moped.
Residents said the road is busy with cyclists, buses, and delivery riders. Speed and limited visibility at junctions have been raised before. One shop owner said crashes are common near the roundabout.
Police asked anyone with dashcam or doorbell footage to come forward. They are particularly interested in any video from before the impact. The investigation is being led by the Serious Collision Investigation Unit.
Moped fatalities have risen in London this year, according to Transport for London data. Delivery riders make up a large share of victims. Safety groups have called for better junction design.
The closure lasted for six hours. The road reopened in the afternoon. Officers said inquiries are ongoing.
