5 Killed as LPG Tanker Slams into Divider and Explodes at Kaushambi’s Sihori Toll Plaza

KAUSHAMBI, India — At least five people have been confirmed dead after a speeding Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) tanker lost control, rammed into a road divider, and erupted into a massive fireball at the Sihori Toll Plaza.

The disaster, which took place during the morning rush hour of Friday, July 3, 2026 under the Kokhraj police station limits, completely engulfed a section of the highway in towering flames and thick black smoke.

According to preliminary findings by the Kaushambi police, the LPG tanker was en route from Kanpur when the driver reportedly lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle. The heavy vehicle slammed heavily into the central road divider, veered off course, and overturned directly by the toll booths.

Recently surfaced CCTV footage captures the terrifying moments immediately following the impact. A dense white cloud of leaking LPG can be seen rapidly expanding across the lanes, completely blinding the plaza area. Seconds later, an unknown ignition source triggered a violent explosion, transforming the gas cloud into a massive fireball that trapped several workers instantly.

"Suddenly the tanker came crashing down," said Sanjay Nirmal, a toll employee who witnessed the crash. "Gas started leaking immediately and within moments the entire area was engulfed in flames."

The driver of the tanker was trapped inside the crushed cabin and died at the scene. Several toll plaza employees working inside the booths and nearby structures suffered critical, life-threatening burn injuries.

The victims were rushed to Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital in Prayagraj for intensive treatment. While medical teams fought to stabilize them, four severely burned employees ultimately succumbed to their injuries over the following days, bringing the total death toll to five. Two other individuals remain hospitalized undergoing treatment.

The sheer heat and force of the blast caused extensive damage to the toll infrastructure and spread aggressively to the facility's parking yard. At least 16 motorcycles and two cars belonging to staff members were reduced to ashes within minutes. Terrified commuters abandoned their vehicles as highway traffic ground to a complete standstill.

Emergency firefighting units and local police battled the blaze for hours before successfully conducting cooling operations. High-level district supply officers and technical inspection teams have been deployed to evaluate the damaged tanker shell and pinpoint the exact mechanical or operational failures that led to the leak.
