34 Arrested Following Fatal Gang Shootout in Eastern Netherlands

OVERASSELT, Netherlands — Dutch police have arrested 34 suspects following an intense, gangland-style gunfight early Tuesday morning that left one man dead and two police officers injured in the quiet eastern village of Overasselt.

The shootout erupted around 4:00 a.m. local time after authorities responded to reports of suspicious activity involving a large group of masked men outside a residential property. Upon arrival, officers were ambushed as roughly 30 individuals wearing balaclavas—some armed with automatic rifles—opened fire on emergency responders. Officers returned fire while rendering first aid to wounded colleagues under heavy gun bursts.

A 51-year-old security guard who had been hired to protect the residence died from severe gunshot injuries at the scene. The two wounded police officers were rushed to a regional hospital and are currently in stable, non-life-threatening condition.

A massive, multi-agency manhunt involving elite arrest teams, police dogs, and helicopter units swept across Gelderland throughout the morning. Authorities intercepted getaway vehicles along the A73 and A76 motorways, while other suspects were flushed out of nearby cornfields and local train stations. Public prosecutors confirmed the 34 individuals taken into custody include nationals from the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Algeria. Investigators believe the daytime ambush stems from a long-running, organized-crime dispute over missing drug shipments. The targeted home had previously been subjected to a drive-by shooting in July 2025 involving a Kalashnikov, which resulted in two prior convictions.

Dutch Justice Minister David van Weel condemned the unprecedented surge of violence as "horrific," promising a full federal prosecution for murder, manslaughter, and attempted manslaughter.

The violent escalation has sent shockwaves through the rural community of Overasselt, where residents expressed disbelief at witnessing an armed confrontation of this scale in their neighborhood. Local authorities have established a temporary mobile police station to provide support to traumatized citizens, while armed patrols remain deployed along key access roads. Municipal leaders have urged residents to report any discarded property or suspicious activity to assist forensic teams as they continue sweeping the broader area for discarded weapons and evidence.
