A new semiconductor factory in Singapore is expected to bring more than machinery and production capacity to the city-state. The VSMC facility in Tampines is also projected to create about 1,600 jobs, adding a workforce dimension to one of Singapore’s largest recent manufacturing projects.

The plant, opened on September 28, 2026, is the first facility operated by VisionPower Semiconductor Manufacturing Company in Singapore. CNA reported that the site is expected to produce around 44,000 wafers each month once it reaches full capacity in 2029.

VSMC is a joint venture involving Vanguard International Semiconductor and NXP Semiconductors. Its manufacturing focus includes chips used across automotive, industrial, mobile, consumer and high-performance computing applications.

The expected 1,600 jobs reflect the changing character of semiconductor manufacturing. A modern fabrication plant requires engineers, technicians, operations specialists and workers capable of maintaining highly controlled production environments.

The industry also increasingly depends on digital systems and automation. Semiconductor factories use sophisticated equipment to process wafers through multiple stages, requiring close coordination between people and machines.

The employment impact therefore extends beyond the number of positions directly located inside the factory. Large semiconductor facilities also require networks of suppliers, maintenance companies, logistics providers and specialized technical services, creating potential activity around the main production site.

Singapore’s semiconductor sector has been an important part of its manufacturing economy for decades. The arrival of another major facility adds capacity while reinforcing the role of skilled technical workers in an industry where precision and reliability are central to production.

The VSMC plant is also being developed with the longer-term growth of physical artificial intelligence in mind. Its chips are intended for applications ranging from vehicles and industrial equipment to other systems in which computing increasingly interacts with the physical world.

For workers, this evolution can create opportunities in areas that sit between traditional manufacturing and advanced technology. Engineering, equipment maintenance, process control and automated production increasingly overlap inside modern semiconductor facilities.

The factory’s projected 1,600 jobs therefore form only one part of a much larger industrial story. As the plant moves toward full capacity over the coming years, Singapore will be watching both the wafers produced inside its cleanrooms and the skills being developed around them.

In that sense, the opening of VSMC’s facility is not simply the arrival of another factory. It represents the meeting point between capital, technology, manufacturing and human expertise — four elements that will continue to shape how Singapore participates in the global semiconductor industry.
