22-Year-Old Woman Dies Beside Buriram Road, After Speeding Pickup Truck Flees Crash Scene

Buriram, Thailand— A speeding vehicle struck and killed a 22-year-old woman standing beside a rural road at 6:10 p.m. on October 28, 2026, then fled into darkness, leaving villagers to find her body on the shoulder.

Police said the victim was walking home from a market stall near Ban Bua village in Mueang Buriram district. She was hit from behind. The impact threw her six meters into a ditch. A motorbike rider who passed minutes later called rescue workers. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers from Mueang Buriram Police Station found broken headlight plastic and black paint scrapes on the road. Tyre skid marks stretched 20 meters. No dashcam footage has been recovered yet. The road is unlit. It has no sidewalk. Locals said cars often pass at over 100 kmph despite a 60 limit.

"We have collected fragments for analysis and are checking CCTV from a shop 500 meters away," said Pol Lt Col Somsak Phromma, investigating officer. He said the vehicle is believed to be a pickup or SUV based on the height of the impact. He asked the driver to come forward.

The victim was identified as a factory worker who had returned to Buriram last month to help her family harvest rice. Her mother said she left home at 5:30 p.m. to buy cooking gas. She was supposed to be back in 30 minutes. The family waited by the road.

Village headman Chanchai Srisawat said the same stretch has seen three fatal crashes this year. He said he asked the district for lights and speed bumps in August. Nothing was installed. "Cars treat this as a highway, but our children walk here," he said. He wants concrete barriers.

Rescue workers said the woman suffered severe head trauma and leg fractures. Her phone was found intact beside her sandal. No wallet was taken, ruling out robbery as a motive in early checks. Police said alcohol testing of the scene was not possible because the driver left.

By 9 p.m., police set up a checkpoint 2 km from the crash site, stopping pickups with fresh front-end damage. They also visited two garages in the area that do late-night body repair. One shop owner told police a white pickup came in at 7 p.m. asking for a quick headlight replacement. That lead is being checked.

The body was sent to Buriram Hospital for autopsy. Police said they will file charges for reckless driving causing death and failure to stop and assist. The fine for hit-and-run death under Thai traffic law can lead to 10 years in jail. The search for the vehicle continued through the night.
