GURUN, Malaysia — A routine military training drill took a devastating turn when a grenade exploded prematurely during an exercise at Kem Hobart in Gurun, Kedah. The tragic accident resulted in the deaths of two Malaysian Army personnel, a male corporal and a female private.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the military community, prompting an immediate halt to all grenade-handling drills nationwide while a formal board of inquiry investigates the cause.

The explosion occurred at approximately 10:57 a.m. of Wednesday, June 17, 2026 at the Hobart Camp firing range. The soldiers were participating in a combat enhancement training exercise conducted by the army's Second Infantry Division.

According to military statements, the two personnel were actively engaged in a live grenade-throwing module when the weapon detonated unexpectedly. Witnesses and nearby personnel reported a loud blast from the designated throwing area, followed by immediate calls for medical emergency units.

The two victims suffered severe traumatic injuries from the force of the blast. Emergency medical teams at the camp provided initial on-site stabilization before rushing both individuals toward the hospital.

Tragically, the Malaysian Army confirmed that both personnel succumbed to their wounds and were pronounced dead while en route to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani. They have been officially identified as 40-year-old Corporal Norazmi Abu Bakar, who served with the Sixth Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (RAMD), and 24-year-old Private Siti Khadijah Sungip, who served with the First Squadron of the Royal Engineers Regiment.

Their remains were subsequently transferred to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for a mandatory post-mortem examination.

Following the incident, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia and Supreme Commander of the Malaysian Armed Forces, expressed his deep sorrow and extended his heartfelt condolences to the grieving families.

In response to the tragedy, Army Chief General Tan Sri Azhan Md Othman announced the immediate suspension of all grenade-throwing exercises across the military.

"We have suspended grenade-throwing training with immediate effect to allow an investigation to be carried out," General Azhan stated. "The cause of the incident will be determined by a board of inquiry that has been established, and follow-up action will be taken based on its findings."

The army has committed to providing full financial assistance, psychological support, and eligible compensation to the families of the deceased as they navigate this unexpected loss. Meanwhile, local police from the Kuala Muda district have recorded the incident and are collaborating closely with military investigators to piece together the final moments leading up to the fatal detonation.
