17-Vehicle Pileup: Highway Collision Sends 9 to Hospital in Massive Chain-Reaction Crash

OAKLAND, CA — A massive 17-vehicle chain-reaction pileup on Interstate 880 brought morning traffic to a standstill on Thursday, July 30, 2026 sending nine people to local hospitals and triggering a sprawling emergency response that lasted for hours.

The multi-vehicle wreck, which involved a large mobile home, commercial trucks, and multiple passenger cars, turned a major commuter artery into a scene of twisted metal and scattered debris.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the incident began just before 7:30 AM during peak rush hour. An initial two-car collision in the northbound lanes caused following motorists to slam on their brakes, triggering a rapid, uncontrollable domino effect across three lanes of traffic.

A large mobile home traveling in the middle lane was unable to stop in time, broad siding a compact SUV and pinning it against the concrete center divider. The sheer force of that impact sent several other vehicles spinning out of control, ultimately trapping a total of 17 vehicles in the wreckage.

Paramedics, firefighters, and multiple heavy-duty tow trucks rushed to the gridlocked highway. First responders had to use specialized extraction equipment, including the "Jaws of Life," to cut two drivers free from their crushed vehicles.

The county emergency medical services confirmed that nine individuals were transported to nearby trauma centers. While three patients are listed in serious condition with severe lacerations and suspected fractures, authorities confirmed that none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening. An additional dozen motorists were treated and released at the scene for minor cuts and bruises.

"It’s a miracle we aren't looking at fatalities given the highway speeds and the involvement of a heavy mobile home," said CHP Officer Marcus Alvarez. "The structural integrity of modern vehicles undoubtedly prevented a much larger tragedy today."

The sheer scale of the pileup forced transportation officials to close all northbound lanes of the interstate for nearly four hours, diverting thousands of commuters onto local roads and creating gridlock that rippled across the entire metropolitan transit corridor.

Crews worked frantically to clear the massive field of debris, which included shattered glass, vehicle fluids, and personal belongings thrown from the heavily damaged mobile home. By early afternoon, two lanes were reopened to ease the backlog, though residual delays persisted well into the evening. An investigation into the precise cause of the initial collision is ongoing. Investigators are currently reviewing dash cam footage from several involved motorists to determine if distracted driving or excessive speed played a role in the initial crash.
