Russian Strike Hits Zaporizhzhia Shopping Center, Injuring at Least 4 Civilians

ZAPORIZHZHIA, Ukraine — A Russian strike hit an Epicentr shopping center in Zaporizhzhia on Friday morning, August 28, 2026, injuring at least four civilians and igniting a massive blaze across the retail complex.

Air raid sirens sounded across the city around 7:30 a.m. local time as military authorities warned of incoming attack drones. Moments later, explosions rocked the area, directly impacting the commercial hub.

The attack ignited an intense fire that quickly spread across approximately 2,000 square meters of the building, sending thick plumes of black smoke over the city. Emergency crews and firefighters rushed to the scene to extinguish the flames and search the structure for survivors.

"The enemy has once again struck the grounds of a shopping center in Zaporizhzhia," confirmed Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration. Fedorov initially reported one casualty before updating the injured toll to at least four as rescue personnel evaluated victims on site.

The assault comes as part of a recurring pattern of strikes targeting commercial infrastructure across Ukraine. Just a day prior, a Russian attack drone struck another Epicentr location in Kharkiv'sOsnovianskyi district, killing a 40-year-old man and injuring five others.

Regional officials emphasized that the facility held no military value and reiterated warnings for residents to seek shelter immediately whenever air raid alerts sound near large retail centers. State emergency services continue to process the scene, assess structural damage, and monitor for additional victims as cleanup operations begin.

In response to the repeated targetings of retail infrastructure, human rights monitors and international observers have renewed calls for strict adherence to international humanitarian law prohibiting deliberate attacks on civilian targets. Meanwhile, local authorities in Zaporizhzhia have dispatched mobile social support units to assist displaced store employees and neighboring residents whose property sustained blast damage, while municipal crews work alongside emergency personnel to clear debris and stabilize surrounding power lines.
