GARBATKA, Poland — A violent collision at an ungated railway crossing in western Poland left one person dead and nearly twenty others injured on Monday afternoon, May 25, 2026. A passenger train derailed and tipped onto its side after slamming into a truck that had entered the tracks.
The disaster occurred in the village of Garbatka, located in the Greater Poland (Wielkopolska) region, roughly 50 kilometers north of Poznań.
According to Polish Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak, the initial investigation indicates that the truck failed to brake as it approached the level crossing, putting it directly in the path of the oncoming train.
The train—a regional railbus operated by Wielkopolska Railways—was traveling on a routine route from Rogoźno to the regional capital of Poznań. The impact was catastrophic. Upon collision, the truck instantly burst into flames, while the momentum of the crash forced the passenger train entirely off the tracks, causing it to roll onto its side in a nearby ditch.
Local police spokesman Krzysztof Polzin described the scene as an incredibly severe and complex accident. Because of the resulting fire and the overturned train cars, a massive rescue operation was immediately launched by regional emergency teams.
The massive emergency deployment included 14 fire brigade units tasked with extinguishing the vehicle fire and securing the wreckage, alongside six standard ambulance teams that triaged passengers on the grass next to the tracks. Additionally, air ambulance helicopters were dispatched to the remote rural site to quickly transport the victims.
Firefighter spokesman Marcin Halasz confirmed that the truck driver died instantly at the scene from the force of the collision and subsequent fire.
Despite the severity of the derailment, a major tragedy for the train's occupants was narrowly averted. While 18 passengers sustained injuries, the majority were treated for minor cuts, bruises, and shock. Emergency personnel reported that only one passenger required extended hospitalization for more acute medical evaluation, while the remaining travelers were cleared at the scene.
The accident has once again thrust the safety of Poland’s rural transit infrastructure into the spotlight. Local authorities have launched a formal investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding why the truck did not stop. The crossing where the crash happened is entirely unmanned and lacks physical barriers or gates, relying solely on warning signs—a vulnerability that transit safety advocates argue continues to pose a major risk to rural commuters.
