NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, Philippines — A violent highway collision late Saturday night turned fatal after a speeding sedan slammed directly into the rear of a motorized tricycle, leaving one person dead and another critically injured along the open stretch of the North National Highway.
The devastating impact completely crushed the passenger cabin of the local transport vehicle, scattering debris across the asphalt and forcing a temporary diversion of provincial traffic.
According to a preliminary report from the Enrique B. Magalona Municipal Police Station, the incident occurred at approximately 11:45 PM of Saturday, June 13, 2026. A late-model silver sedan was traveling north at a high rate of speed when it approached a motorized tricycle moving in the same direction.
Traffic investigators stated that the driver of the sedan failed to slow down or notice the smaller vehicle ahead in time. The sedan rammed violently into the rear of the tricycle, launching the lighter vehicle several meters into a roadside drainage ditch. The sheer force of the momentum left the tricycle unrecognizable—its metal passenger sidecar completely flattened and torn away from the motorcycle chassis.
Onlookers and nearby residents rushed to the scene after hearing a deafening crash, immediately contacting local emergency services as the sedan came to a halt further down the highway with heavy front-end damage.
Municipal rescue teams and local medics arrived shortly after midnight to extract the victims from the mangled wreckage in the ditch.
The passenger of the tricycle, identified as a 42-year-old local resident, sustained catastrophic head and chest trauma from the initial impact. Medics attempted to administer CPR on-site, but he was tragically pronounced dead on arrival upon reaching the Teresita L. Jalandoni Provincial Hospital.
The 38-year-old tricycle driver survived the initial crash but sustained multiple severe fractures to his lower extremities and internal injuries. He remains in critical condition and is currently undergoing emergency surgery.
The 26-year-old driver of the sedan escaped the horrific crash completely unscathed. Responding police officers immediately took him into custody at the scene after he allegedly exhibited signs of intoxication.
"We are currently awaiting the official results of the breathalyzer and toxicology reports," stated the lead traffic investigator. "However, initial physical assessments at the scene strongly indicate that alcohol and excessive speed were major contributing factors to this tragedy."
The suspect is currently detained at the E.B. Magalona custodial facility. Law enforcement officials confirmed they are preparing to file formal criminal charges against him, including Reckless Imprudence Resulting in Homicide, Serious Physical Injuries, and Damage to Property under the Revised Penal Code of the Philippines.
