Tragedy in the Rain: Trailer Truck Helper Killed in Violent Metro Manila Wing Van Collision

PASIG CITY, METRO MANILA — A fatal road accident marred by a heavy downpour claimed the life of a trailer truck helper (pahinante) late Saturday night, June 13, 2026, after his vehicle slammed violently into the rear of a stalled wing van along the C5 Ortigas Flyover in Barangay Ugong.

The catastrophic crash triggered extensive traffic gridlock across a major arterial route of Metro Manila, shutting down the entire southbound lane of the flyover for nearly twelve hours while emergency crews conducted a massive clearing operation.

According to reports from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and Pasig City traffic officials, the incident occurred past 11:00 PM in the middle of a torrential downpour. A trailer truck heavily loaded with cases of soft drinks was traversing the southbound lane of the C5 Ortigas Flyover when it failed to avoid a disabled wing van carrying a cargo of corn.

The wing van had broken down and was stalled directly on the roadway. MMDA Traffic Aide Apple Eguia stated that because the road was slick from the rain and the truck was traveling at a high speed, the driver was unable to maneuver away in time. The driver later informed investigators that a smaller Elf truck had abruptly overtaken his vehicle moments before the impact, completely blocking his view of the stalled wing van ahead.

The sheer velocity of the impact completely crushed the front tractor head of the trailer truck, trapping the helper inside the mangled metal wreckage of the cab.

Rescue teams arrived swiftly at the scene, but extracting the pinned victim proved exceptionally challenging due to the severity of the vehicle deformation. First responders spent over three hours using specialized extrication tools to cut through the twisted cabin framework.

The helper was finally removed from the crushed cab shortly after 2:00 AM on Sunday, June 14. Tragically, due to the heavy trauma sustained during the impact, he succumbed to his injuries. His remains were immediately transferred to a local funeral home. Miraculously, both truck drivers involved survived the collision completely uninjured.

Beyond the fatal casualty, the collision resulted in an extensive environmental and logistical mess. The impact shattered thousands of glass bottles, scattering soft drinks and debris across the flyover.

MMDA and local Pasig crews had to work past daybreak to restore road safety. After heavy wreckers separated the destroyed truck section from its trailer, a fire truck from Barangay Ugong was brought in to conduct flushing operations to wash away sticky residue and glass shards. The flyover lane was finally declared passable to the public at 10:30 AM on Sunday.

The driver of the trailer truck was taken into custody by the Pasig City Traffic Sector. Authorities are currently moving forward with plans to file formal charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property.
