MAGALUF, SPAIN — A devastating residential fire tore through an apartment building in the popular Mediterranean resort hub of Magaluf early Thursday morning, June 11, 2026, killing two people and injuring dozens of others. The tragedy has plunged the vibrant holiday destination into a state of shock, prompting local officials to declare an official period of mourning.
The fire erupted at approximately 5:00 AM on the third floor of a residential building located on Martín Ros García Street. Awakened by the smoke and heat, several residents desperately tried to extinguish the flames themselves. However, their attempts were unsuccessful, and the fire quickly intensified, tearing upward through the higher levels of the structure.
A massive emergency operation was immediately deployed to the scene, including firefighting units, medical personnel, and the Spanish Civil Guard. Emergency teams worked aggressively for roughly two hours to combat the fast-moving inferno and rescue residents trapped on the upper floors. More than a dozen people were successfully evacuated from the burning structure as thick black smoke filled the morning sky.
Despite the rapid intervention of first responders, authorities confirmed two fatalities. The victims, found in separate apartments, were identified as a 58-year-old Argentine citizen and an unidentified woman. The incident also resulted in a high number of injuries, largely due to intense smoke inhalation. Emergency services reported treating a total of 24 people. Among those injured were eight firefighters who were overcome while performing high-risk search and rescue operations inside the building.
Of the affected individuals, four residents required urgent transfer to major medical facilities in nearby Palma, with two patients sent to Son Llàtzer Hospital and two others taken to Son Espases University Hospital.
The fire impacted roughly 20 residents within the building, leaving many temporarily homeless. To assist those displaced by the destruction, local authorities coordinated with nearby hotels in the Calvià municipal area to provide immediate emergency housing.
Following the containment of the blaze, fire crews and forensic units cordoned off the third floor where the fire originated, as well as the floors directly above and below it, to preserve the scene for analysis. The exact cause of the initial outbreak remains unknown and is under active investigation by the Civil Guard. In response to the loss of life, municipal leaders have declared two days of official local mourning.
