TUBUNGAN, ILOILO — A quiet Sunday morning turned devastating for a rural community in Iloilo when a sudden landslide struck a residential home during the early hours of dawn, claiming the life of a 68-year-old resident.

The disaster, triggered by days of persistent downpours, completely overwhelmed the victim's house, making it the latest fatal incident in the region as severe monsoon weather continues to sweep across Western Visayas.

Local emergency officials identified the fatality as Placido Tabaling, a married resident of Barangay Nagba, a mountainous village located within the municipality of Tubungan.

According to initial reports from the Tubungan Municipal Police Station, the incident occurred at approximately 4:00 AM on Sunday, July 12, 2026, while the household was still asleep. Investigators revealed that Tabaling was resting on the balcony of his home when a massive wall of mud and loosened earth detached from the nearby slope, crashing violently into the structure and trapping him beneath the debris.

Due to the remote location and disrupted conditions, the incident was officially reported to local emergency units later that morning at around 6:50 AM.

Immediately following the report, barangay personnel joined forces with the Tubungan Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) to initiate an urgent search and retrieval operation.

Rescuers spent hours shifting through heavy mud and collapsed building materials before locating Tabaling's body. Emergency responders quickly loaded the victim into a rescue vehicle and rushed him to the Tubungan Rural Health Unit. Tragically, medical personnel declared that he did not survive the journey and was pronounced dead on arrival.
