Strong Magnitude 6.2 Earthquake Strikes Off the Coast of Davao Oriental

DAVAO ORIENTAL, Philippines — A strong magnitude 6.2 offshore earthquake jolted the southern Philippine region of Mindanao on Monday afternoon, June 15, 2026, sending fresh tremors through a population still recovering from a catastrophic disaster just one week prior.

The state seismology bureau, PHIVOLCS, initially recorded the tectonic event as a magnitude 6.6 before downgrading it to 6.2. According to data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the tremor struck at exactly 5:18 PM local time (0918 GMT) at an approximate depth of 112 kilometers. Its epicenter was traced out in the sea, southeast of the coastal town of Governor Generoso.

Due to the significant depth of the earthquake, no immediate casualties, major injuries, or structural damages were reported. However, the tremor was felt with varying degrees of intensity across several provinces in Mindanao, ranging from a stronger Intensity III that caused brief alarm in General Santos City, to a milder Intensity II in Davao City, Digos City, parts of South Cotabato, Sarangani, and Baganga, down to weak Intensity I vibrations further inland in Tampakan and Kiamba.

While state seismologists confirmed that no tsunami warnings were triggered by the event, provincial disaster management teams quickly turned their attention to the shoreline.

"Our priority now is to monitor the coast to determine if there are indications the water had receded," stated Kaiser Cadiz of the Davao Oriental provincial disaster office, noting that no unusual coastal activity had been observed so far.

The afternoon tremor caused a wave of anxiety across the island of Mindanao, coming precisely one week after a catastrophic 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the region on June 8, 2026.

That previous disaster brought down multiple buildings, triggered severe landslides, displaced thousands of families, and prompted a massive regional rescue operation. On Monday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) officially raised the death toll from the June 8 disaster to 65, with 36 individuals still listed as missing.

Because the region has already endured more than 2,100 aftershocks—several exceeding magnitude 6.0—disaster response units remain on high alert. PHIVOLCS has assured the public that while no damage is expected from Monday's 6.2 tremor, local communities should brace themselves for further minor aftershocks.

The Philippines is hit by earthquakes nearly every day due to its geographic position along the Pacific "Ring of Fire". This vast, horseshoe-shaped zone of intense volcanic and seismic activity stretches across the Pacific Ocean Basin, making eastern Mindanao particularly vulnerable to violent shifts in tectonic plates.

Disaster management officials continue to urge local residents to remain vigilant, inspect their properties for existing structural cracks, and familiarize themselves with earthquake safety protocols as regional recovery efforts proceed.
