Polavaram, India—The tragedy unfolded at approximately 10:00 am on Saturday morning near Gollagudem village. A group of ten local residents had entered the Godavari River to fish, hoping to take advantage of increased water flows downstream from Bhadrachalam. They were using mosquito nets and clothing as improvised gear, moving across the riverbed while holding hands.

Five members of the group drifted into a deeper, submerged section of the channel and were swept away by the current. The remaining five individuals attempted to locate their companions rather than signaling for external help, leading to a critical delay in the response time. By the time authorities were alerted, the victims had already been submerged for a significant period.

Police from the Yetapaka mandal and local boatmen conducted an exhaustive search of the riverbanks throughout the afternoon. All five bodies were eventually recovered from the water. The deceased were identified as Ooke Sushila, Ooke Lakshmi, Turram Bharati, Bhasuboina Balaraju, and Ooke Ramesh. Their remains were transported to the Chintoor government hospital for formal autopsies.

Local officials expressed frustration that the group ventured into the water despite the dangerous, uneven depth of the river. The Godavari has been volatile due to recent monsoon rains, and the floodwaters can create unexpected trenches even in areas that appear shallow. The victims reportedly became adventurous as they pursued the catch, ignoring the risks posed by the changing topography.

A pall of gloom has descended on the nearby G Kottagudem village as families prepare for the final rites. Government leaders, including the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, expressed profound grief over the loss of the tribal residents. Financial assistance has been requested by regional leaders to support the affected families.

Law enforcement has registered a formal case, though the incident is being treated as an accidental drowning. The river remains under monitoring as water levels continue to fluctuate. Local authorities have issued warnings to villagers to avoid fishing in unauthorized and deep sections of the Godavari.

The riverbank where the incident occurred has been restricted to prevent further accidents. Police are conducting awareness sessions in the surrounding hamlets to emphasize the dangers of the swollen river. Community leaders are working to ensure that traditional fishing practices are conducted with safer equipment and in verified areas.

The village continues to mourn as the investigation into the safety protocols of the area closes. There is no indication of foul play. The focus of the local administration is now on providing aid to the households that lost their primary earners in the tragedy.
