Midnight Carnage: Two Dead, One Critically Injured in Suspected Street Race Along Davao-Bukidnon Road

DAVAO CITY, PHILIPPINES — A high-speed multi-motorcycle crash suspected to be an illegal street race turned a stretch of the Davao-Bukidnon Road into a scene of devastation early Monday morning, leaving two riders dead and another fighting for life in the hospital.

The horrific incident occurred around 2:00 AM along the highway in Barangay Catalunan Pequeño, Davao City. According to initial reports from the Davao City Police Office, several motorcycles were traveling at extreme speeds when one rider lost control, triggering a violent chain-reaction collision that scattered debris across the asphalt.

Bystanders and passing motorists rushed to help the victims, describing the impact as deafening. The force of the crash completely mangled three motorcycles and threw the riders several meters onto the hard shoulder.

Emergency responders arrived shortly after to find two of the young riders completely unresponsive due to severe head and internal trauma. They were pronounced dead at the scene. Paramedics stabilized a third rider who sustained critical, life-threatening injuries and rushed him to the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC), where he remains in intensive care.

"We heard the loud roaring of engines just before a massive crash," a local resident recalled. "People have been using this long stretch of the highway for illegal drag racing late at night, and we always feared a tragedy like this would happen."

Traffic investigators have secured CCTV footage from nearby establishments to verify if the riders were actively competing against one another at the time of the crash. Local authorities issued a stern warning following the tragedy, promising an immediate crackdown on illegal street racing and increased police checkpoints along the Davao-Bukidnon Road to prevent further loss of life.

Community leaders and local youth advocates have quickly voiced their concerns following the incident, urging families to more strictly monitor their children’s late-night activities and vehicle usage. Many residents noted that despite previous warning signs, the stretch of highway has increasingly become a magnet for thrill-seeking teenagers on modified bikes, especially during the early hours of Monday mornings. Advocacy groups are now pushing for the installation of permanent speed bumps, additional street lighting, and more speed-monitoring cameras along the notorious segment of the road to act as a stronger deterrent.

Meanwhile, the Southern Philippines Medical Center has reported that the surviving rider remains in highly critical condition, requiring multiple emergency surgeries to stabilize his condition. As traffic investigators continue to review the retrieved CCTV footage, the Davao City Police Office is preparing to file formal charges against any individuals found to have organized or participated in the illegal event. The tragedy has renewed calls across the region for stricter penalties against street racing, with city council members promising to review municipal ordinances to significantly increase fines and impoundment periods for modified racing motorcycles.
