Industrial Disaster in Bengal: 30 Injured as Naphtha Pipeline Fire Rages at Haldia Petrochemical Plant

HALDIA, India — A catastrophic industrial disaster struck West Bengal's industrial hub early on Tuesday morning, June 30, 2026 when a massive fire erupted along a naphtha-carrying pipeline at the Haldia Petrochemicals Limited (HPL) plant. The intense blaze left at least 30 people injured, sent a violent shockwave through the East Midnapore district, and forced a widespread emergency response.

The incident, which occurred between 3:00 AM and 4:30 AM, instantly blanketed the night sky with towering walls of flame and thick plumes of toxic black smoke.

According to local residents and witnesses, the disaster unfolded shortly after a heavy lightning strike rattled the Chiranjibpur area. Within moments, a primary pipeline transporting naphtha—a highly volatile and flammable liquid hydrocarbon—ruptured and ignited.

The fire spread with devastating speed, engulfing several nearby residential structures situated along the perimeter of the plant. Residents who had rushed outside in confusion after hearing the lightning and subsequent pipeline fracture were caught in the expanding fireball.

"The pipeline ignited within seconds," recalled a local resident. "People were running in panic as the fire spread toward the houses. The heat was completely unbearable."

Emergency medical teams rushed the victims to local facilities, where 14 individuals were found to have sustained severe, life-threatening burn injuries. Among those hospitalized were factory workers, area residents, and two plant security personnel who were caught in the initial blast radius.

The overwhelming scale of the medical crisis forced a rapid, tiered triage of the casualties: while Haldia Sub-Divisional Hospital provided immediate stabilization for the majority of the injured, the critically wounded were transferred to Tamluk District Hospital for specialized interventions. Additionally, six of the most severely burned patients were rushed under emergency escort to advanced trauma units at Kolkata's state-run SSKM and NRS Medical Colleges.

Fire and Rescue teams deployed 12 major firefighting engines to the scene. Because of naphtha’s highly chemical nature, responders had to fight the flames using specialized foam and fly ash to suffocate the perimeter and prevent the blaze from reaching volatile storage tanks nearby.

The disaster also caused immediate economic and commuter gridlock. Because the pipeline runs adjacent to the regional railway infrastructure, the intense heat severely damaged overhead railway equipment. Southeast Railway officials suspended all train operations between Haldia, Durgachak, and Howrah, forcing the cancellation and short-termination of multiple local commuter lines.

While local accounts point to a lightning strike, a formal probe has been launched by senior police and district administrators to establish the definitive cause.

In an official statement released hours after the disaster, Haldia Petrochemicals Limited noted that preliminary data points to potential illegal activity near the point of failure: "Preliminary information suggests that the incident may have occurred in the vicinity of an unauthorized naphtha theft point located in the plant's vicinity," the company stated, adding that it has consistently warned local communities against the extreme safety risks of mishandling petroleum products.

Company officials and forensic teams have cordoned off the facility as they begin technical audits to determine whether the rupture was caused by a lightning strike, mechanical integrity degradation, or external tampering.
