France’s national public health agency reported roughly 1,000 excess deaths at the height of a record-breaking heatwave. Officials said the number is an initial estimate and could increase as additional information becomes available, including deaths recorded at home and in residential care facilities.
The agency said the worst impacts were concentrated during the hottest days, and were particularly pronounced in the Paris region. It also reported increased demand for heat-related assistance, including a rise in related calls from households.
Health officials emphasized that many of the affected deaths involved older people, especially those aged 65 and above. As temperatures eased in some areas, they cautioned that heat-related health effects can persist, and that authorities will update the toll as they continue to compile and analyze death records.
