Crash on Tsing Kwai Highway: Double-Decker Bus Rams Maintenance Vehicle, Injuring 21

HONG KONG — A major traffic collision on the Tsing Kwai Highway left 21 people injured after a double-decker commuter bus slammed into a stationary highway maintenance vehicle. The violent impact triggered a massive emergency response, severely disrupting traffic along one of Hong Kong's primary transport arteries.

The incident occurred during the morning hours of Monday, May 25, 2026 on the Kowloon-bound lane of the Tsing Kwai Highway. According to preliminary reports, a KMB double-decker bus was traveling along its scheduled route when it collided heavily with the rear of a highway maintenance truck parked on the shoulder.

The maintenance vehicle, which was equipped with a rear-mounted crash cushion (attenuator) designed to absorb high-velocity impacts, bore the brunt of the collision. The front of the double-decker bus sustained severe structural damage, shattering the windshield and trapping several passengers inside the twisted metal of the lower deck.

Emergency dispatchers deployed multiple ambulances, fire engines, and rescue personnel to the scene, where first responders quickly established a triage zone on the highway to treat victims. A total of 21 individuals, including the bus driver and 20 passengers, sustained injuries ranging from minor lacerations to severe blunt-force trauma; paramedics stabilized them on-site before rushing them to nearby medical facilities, including Princess Margaret Hospital and Yan Chai Hospital, for urgent treatment.

Fortunately, the highway maintenance crew members were working at a safe distance ahead of their vehicle at the exact moment of impact and managed to escape the crash entirely unharmed.

The aftermath of the crash forced transport authorities to temporarily close multiple Kowloon-bound lanes on the Tsing Kwai Highway. The closure triggered severe traffic congestion, stretching back several kilometers and delaying thousands of morning commuters.

Local police have launched a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Investigators are currently reviewing the bus’s black box data, dashcam footage, and the driver's alertness to determine why the maintenance vehicle—which reportedly had its hazard lights and warning signals fully activated—was not avoided.
