Chaos in Tripoli: Celebratory Fireworks Spark Infernal Blaze, Destroying 4 Apartments

TRIPOLI, Libya — What was meant to be a joyous community celebration turned into a scene of panic and destruction on Sunday afternoon when a fire, sparked by celebratory fireworks, tore through a multi-story residential building in the Al-Dreibi district of Tripoli on Sunday afternoon, July 19, 2026.

The fast-moving blaze left four apartments severely damaged and forced dozens of residents to flee into the streets as thick black smoke blanketed the neighborhood.

According to eyewitnesses and local emergency officials, the incident began during an outdoor family celebration in the densely populated Al-Dreibi neighborhood. In keeping with local custom, attendees began launching powerful fireworks to mark the occasion.

However, the festivities took a disastrous turn when a stray rocket veered off course, striking a third-floor balcony of a nearby apartment building. The explosive firework quickly ignited highly flammable outdoor furniture and synthetic curtains, feeding a fire that spread exponentially within minutes.

Driven by strong afternoon winds, the flames swept upward, engulfing the upper floors of the building before municipal emergency services could arrive.

The Tripoli Fire Department and Civil Defense units deployed multiple fire engines and specialized ladder trucks to the scene after receiving frantic calls from neighbors.

Firefighters faced considerable difficulty navigating the narrow streets of the district, which were crowded with parked cars and gathering onlookers. Upon arrival, crews immediately initiated a dual operation: containing the rapidly advancing flames while simultaneously launching an aggressive search-and-rescue mission inside the smoke-filled building.

Paramedics treated several residents at the scene for minor smoke inhalation and panic attacks, but miraculous communication and quick evacuations by neighbors ensured that no major casualties or fatalities were reported.

It took emergency crews over two hours of intense effort to fully extinguish the blaze and damp down the hot spots. By the time the area was declared safe, the building's facade was heavily charred, and four residential apartments were left completely gutted by the fire.

"We heard loud bangs and thought it was just the party," said one displaced resident who lived on the fourth floor. "Then we heard screaming and realized the building was on fire. We ran out with nothing but the clothes on our backs. Everything we own is gone."

Local charity organizations and community members have stepped in to provide temporary housing, blankets, and essential supplies to the affected families who have been displaced by the disaster.

The incident has once again brought the unregulated use of fireworks during public and private celebrations into the political spotlight. In the wake of Sunday’s destruction, Tripoli law enforcement and safety officials issued a stern reminder to the public regarding the severe dangers of launching pyrotechnics in urban areas.

An official investigation has been launched into the exact origin of the fireworks, and authorities are considering legal action against those responsible for organizing the display without the proper safety permits.
