Voting machine company settles $1B defamation suit against Mike Lindell

The voting machine company formerly known as Dominion Voting Systems has dropped its billion-dollar defamation lawsuit against Mike Lindell, CEO of MyPillow, according to a statement.

The company—now known as Liberty Vote—said the parties agreed to a confidential settlement. The deal follows Lindell being sued in 2021 for defamation over claims he promoted about the 2020 election despite allegedly knowing they were false.

The lawsuit was settled eight months after Dominion was purchased by Scott Leiendecker, a former Republican election official. In a court filing filed late Wednesday, the parties agreed to dismiss the defamation case and that each side would bear its own attorneys’ fees, expenses, and costs.

Lindell, who is running for governor of Minnesota, said the settlement was a “relief.” He also compared the outcome to a previous settlement involving Fox News.

The dispute did not occur in a vacuum: a jury last year issued a $2.3 million judgment against Lindell after finding he defamed a former Dominion director over election-fraud claims. A judge also found Lindell defamed Smartmatic with similar false assertions, though the damages amount has not yet been determined.
