Vanished into Thin Air: Cargo Plane with 5 Aboard Missing off Pakistan Coast

KARACHI — A massive search-and-rescue operation is underway in the Arabian Sea after a Boeing 737 cargo aircraft carrying five crew members vanished from radar late Tuesday night, July 7, 2026. Aviation authorities fear the plane may have crashed into the sea following a sequence of erratic mid-air altitude changes and a terrifying, sudden dive.

The 27-year-old converted freighter, operated by the Karachi-based private carrier K2 Airways, was en route from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates to Karachi when disaster struck.

According to data released by the Pakistan Airports Authority and flight-tracking platform Flightradar24, the flight was progressing normally until it neared its destination.

At 9:18 PM (PST), the crew made contact with local air traffic control to report a critical navigational system issue while en route to Karachi, prompting controllers to immediately attempt manual guidance. Just three minutes later, at 9:21 PM (PST), radar indicated a sudden and sharp change in the aircraft's heading accompanied by extreme altitude fluctuations.

Flight-tracking data from the chaotic final minute revealed that the plane plummeted roughly 5,000 feet, surged back up 6,000 feet in a mere 30 seconds, and then entered a final, catastrophic dive from 36,550 feet. All radio and radar contact was ultimately lost approximately 155 nautical miles (287 kilometers) west of Karachi, with the last transmitted data point placing the aircraft at just 1,100 feet above sea level while dropping at a severe vertical velocity of minus 22,400 feet per minute.

Pakistan's Rescue Coordination Centre was immediately activated following the loss of signal. A joint military and civilian mobilization has deployed multiple air and sea assets to the area, including the Pakistan Navy frigate PNS Zulfiqar.

Aviation experts have noted that the suddenness of the plunge points to a severe technical failure or an catastrophic loss of control. "Even if an aircraft suffers an total engine failure, it would normally continue gliding rather than plunge suddenly," aviation expert Imran Aslam told local media. "I still cannot understand how the plane went down so abruptly instead of gliding."

In an official statement released on Wednesday, K2 Airways confirmed the identities of the five crew members on board. "We are fully cooperating with the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority and other government agencies," the airline stated on Facebook. "We continue to pray, earnestly, for the safety of our colleagues."

As ships and aircraft comb the choppy waters of the Arabian Sea, the families of the five missing crew members face an agonizing wait for answers.
