UNESCO Adds France’s D-Day Landing Beaches and Greece’s Mount Olympus to World Heritage List

UNESCO has added France’s Normandy D-Day landing beaches—Omaha, Utah, Sword, Gold and Juno, plus Pointe du Hoc—to the World Heritage List. The committee also inscribed Greece’s Mount Olympus, honoring both its mythology and rich biodiversity, after a long campaign for recognition. UNESCO said the D-Day sites preserve extensive remains including fortifications and memorials tied to the 6 June 1944 landings of more than 150,000 Allied troops. Mount Olympus is recognized as a mixed cultural and natural site.
