The United Kingdom is confronted with an impending "economic catastrophe", prompted by an alarming rise in youth unemployment and a generation of young people who have become "rewired" by smartphones, according to Alan Milburn, the government’s jobs tsar. Milburn, appointed by Sir Keir Starmer, is set to release an interim report soon that sheds light on these urgent issues.
The report indicates that nearly 1 million young people aged 16 to 24 are classified as NEET (not in education, employment, or training), with statistics showing 729,000 young people in this category between January and March 2026. This marks an increase of 110,000 compared to the previous year. Milburn suggests that a significant contributor to this situation is a "rising tide of mental ill-health, anxiety, and depression."
Milburn emphasizes that current systemic flaws are "trapping people in worklessness" instead of enabling them to secure jobs. He highlights the phenomenon of a "bedroom generation," where young adults often spend extended periods online instead of developing practical workplace skills.
The influence of social media is considerable, with Milburn arguing that it is altering communication styles, how relationships are formed, and even stress management. He insists that this isn't merely a case of "snowflakes", as some critics claim. Instead, he describes them as “anxious”, facing real challenges that impede their prospects.
Milburn's insights stress the need for an overhaul of the welfare system, which he believes was designed for a different era and is ill-equipped to meet current demands. If the issues remain unaddressed, he warns that this could lead to long-term dependency on benefits among young people, profoundly affecting economic growth.
The report comes at a vital time, emphasizing the importance of adapting both educational frameworks and employment practices to better serve this emerging generation, who are, in many ways, navigating a vastly different world compared to their predecessors. As Milburn succinctly puts it, “The tragedy is that young people have so much potential, but their lives are filled with too many obstacles.”
