In a proactive public health measure, Uganda has closed its border with Congo “with immediate effect,” due to a significant increase in suspected Ebola cases across the border. A local task force, led by Vice President Jesca Alupo, implemented the decision, noting that Ugandan health workers had been exposed to the virus from Congolese patients prior to the official outbreak declaration on May 15.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the outbreak in Congo involves the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, which lacks approved treatments or vaccines. The WHO has declared this outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, acknowledging the high risk of contagion in neighboring countries like Uganda.
As of now, Congo has reported 121 confirmed cases and 17 deaths related to this outbreak, with over 1,000 suspected cases and an estimated 246 suspected deaths. In Uganda, there are currently seven confirmed cases, including one death recorded earlier this month.
The Ugandan government’s border closure comes amid critical concerns that such restrictions may drive movements to informal crossings, increasing the risk of disease spread. WHO has cautioned that border closures can complicate response efforts, suggesting they often backfire by pushing people to use unmonitored routes where disease transmission could thrive.
While essential cross-border travel — for outbreak response, cargo, or security reasons — will still be permitted, those entering from Congo will face mandatory isolation for 21 days. Ugandan authorities emphasize the need for vigilance among the population, advising against close contact and advocating the use of sanitizers in public spaces.
As the situation continues to evolve, both Uganda and Congo face the challenge of managing this serious health crisis while trying to mitigate the broader impacts on public health and regional stability.
