David “Davey” Hearn, a three-time U.S. Olympian in canoe slalom, has been charged in connection with alleged vandalism at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C.
Hearn told reporters he was detained after a brief contact with a loose strip of blue coating along the bottom of the pool. He said he was stopping for a bike ride when he noticed the material appeared to have delaminated and that he reached out only to touch it lightly. He also said a National Park Service employee told him to stop and that police then took him into custody.
Hearn denied damaging or removing any part of the Reflecting Pool, adding that he was handcuffed, held for several hours, and not allowed to make phone calls during that time. He said he intends to contest the charge and is seeking legal counsel.
The Reflecting Pool renovation has faced scrutiny after visitors and media reported algae growth and peeling paint shortly after the work was completed. Trump has alleged the damage was caused by vandals, and officials said multiple people have been arrested or cited as investigators look into the claims. A court appearance date has been set for Hearn.
