U.S. and Mexico Pledge Ongoing Joint Security Efforts During DHS Secretary Mullin's Visit

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin met with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to establish a framework for ongoing joint security efforts between the two nations. This meeting comes in the wake of rising tensions following the deaths of two CIA agents at Mexico's northern border and subsequent drug trafficking indictments against ten Mexican officials.

President Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of cooperation that respects Mexico's sovereignty, stating, “We will maintain cooperation based on mutual respect.” Her administration has navigated delicate relations with the U.S., especially concerning bilateral security agreements while asserting Mexico's rights amidst threats of potential military intervention by the U.S.

The meeting, held at the presidential palace, was marked by discussions about humane treatment for migrants and local security measures. Mullin also met with Mexico’s Security Cabinet and expressed the U.S. commitment to collaborate on reducing violence and addressing drug trafficking.

Amid their discussions, both leaders sought to highlight successful bilateral efforts that have led to a 50-year low in Mexican citizen crossings at the U.S. border. Sheinbaum additionally raised concerns regarding the deaths of 15 Mexican migrants in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers since 2025. She has called for daily consulate visits to these facilities to ensure humane conditions for detainees.

Notably, the accused Mexican officials linked to the indictments include members of the governing Morena party. However, Sheinbaum has ruled out discussions about their legal cases during the meeting with Mullin.

This visit marks a significant moment in U.S.-Mexico relations, highlighting both nations' shared interests in security while addressing the challenges posed by ongoing drug trafficking and immigration issues. As they move forward, both President Sheinbaum and Secretary Mullin aim to foster a cooperative spirit that respects each country’s sovereignty and mutual interests.
