Tsomo CBD Inferno: Explosion Sparks Deadly Fire, Trapping and Killing 6 Foreign Nationals

TSOMO, EASTERN CAPE — A horrific midnight tragedy has sent shockwaves through the small town of Tsomo after a sudden, devastating fire tore through a local retail supershop, killing six foreign nationals and leaving another fighting for his life.

The catastrophic incident occurred at approximately 3:00 AM on Monday, July 27, 2026 inside a commercial building located roughly 150 kilometers from Komani (formerly Queenstown). According to preliminary local reports, seven Bangladeshi nationals—most of whom were close relatives working at the store—were asleep in the residential quarters located inside the shop when the fire violently erupted without warning.

The fast-moving inferno quickly engulfed the structure, trapping the sleeping occupants inside before they could react or reach the exits. By the time emergency crews and local police arrived on the scene, the building was completely compromised by thick smoke and intense flames.

Firefighters worked desperately to suppress the blaze, but six individuals died at the scene. A lone survivor was miraculously pulled from the smoke-filled ruins with severe injuries and was rushed to a hospital in Komani, where he remains in critical condition.

The identities of five of the victims have since been confirmed by family members and local representatives as Md Faisal (25), Md Fahim (28), Shamim Hasan (30), Mohammad Apon (24), and Rajik Bepari (52). The tragedy has devastated communities back in their home country, particularly in the Narayanganj and Munshiganj districts of Bangladesh, where relatives are mourning the loss of loved ones who had traveled abroad to support their families.

South African Police Service (SAPS) officials have launched an official inquest docket to uncover the precise origin and cause of the blaze.

The Bangladesh High Commission in Pretoria expressed deep sorrow over the catastrophe. High Commissioner Shah Ahmed Shafi immediately traveled to the Tsomo area to inspect the wreckage, meet with senior South African police officials, and ensure that the investigation is thoroughly conducted while coordinating necessary assistance for the victims' families.

Local community members and fellow business owners in the Tsomo central business district gathered outside the charred remains of the shop as forensic teams combed through the debris.
