GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines — A quiet morning shattered in tragedy on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, after a 46-year-old purok official perished in a fast-moving residential fire that engulfed his home in General Santos City.

The victim, identified by local authorities as Roberto "Gibo" Santos, a dedicated community leader and sub-village (purok) official, was trapped inside the structure as the flames aggressively spread, making rescue impossible.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) General Santos City station, the emergency call was received at approximately 8:15 AM from a densely populated residential zone in Barangay Calumpang. Onlookers stated that the fire originated on the lower level of the two-story home, which was partially constructed from lightweight, highly flammable materials.

Eyewitnesses recalled seeing Santos frantically attempting to retrieve important community documents and personal belongings from the second floor. However, within minutes, thick, toxic smoke and escalating flames completely cut off his only exit path down the stairs. Neighbors tried to position a ladder against the side of the house, but the extreme heat and billowing black smoke forced them back.

"We tried to throw water and yell for him to jump from the window, but the fire grew too fast," said a distraught neighbor. "By the time the fire trucks arrived, the second floor had already collapsed."
