Tragic NH-137 Crash: 1 Dead, 1 Critically Injured in Severe Assam Road Accident

HAFLONG, Assam — A tragic road accident along National Highway 137 claimed one life and left another individual fighting for survival at Chudiningram in Assam's Dima Hasao district on Saturday evening, August 15, 2026.

The fatal mishap occurred around 4:30 p.m. within the jurisdiction of the Mahur Police Station, prompting an immediate emergency response from local authorities and nearby residents.

Police identified the deceased as 40-year-old Haijeteung Riame, a resident of Impoi village. Riame sustained critical injuries during the crash and was immediately rushed by first responders to the Mahur Primary Health Centre (PHC), where attending medical officers pronounced him dead on arrival.

Another individual, identified as 32-year-old Ramsamingbe Newme from Mahur Town, suffered severe, life-threatening injuries in the collision. Emergency medical personnel initially provided stabilization care at Mahur PHC before transferring him to Haflong Civil Hospital for advanced trauma management.

"The victim sustained catastrophic injuries from the impact and could not be revived despite swift transport to the health centre. The surviving victim remains under close medical monitoring."— Local Medical Officer, Mahur Primary Health Centre

The body of the deceased was subsequently transported to Haflong Civil Hospital for a mandatory post-mortem examination as part of the legal and procedural requirements.

Officers from Mahur Police Station have launched a formal investigation into the crash. Authorities are currently examining the accident site and gathering physical evidence to ascertain whether high speed, poor visibility, or mechanical failure contributed to the fatal collision.

Community members and local commuters have expressed growing concern over safety along this stretch of National Highway 137, noting that sharp curves and inadequate road lighting often heighten collision risks during evening hours. Nearby residents called on the district administration to install clearer warning signs and speed humps near Chudiningram to prevent similar mishaps.

Meanwhile, local leaders extended their deep condolences to the bereaved family in Impoi village and urged drivers navigating the hilly terrain of Dima Hasao to exercise heightened caution, particularly during peak travel times.
