Tragedy Over Rio: 6 Dead After Mid-Air Helicopter Collision

RIO DE JANEIRO — A catastrophic mid-air collision between two civilian helicopters over Rio de Janeiro has left six people dead, including prominent international figures from the entertainment and digital world.

The disaster unfolded on Sunday morning, June 14, 2026, over the coastal, western suburb of Recreio dos Bandeirantes, scattering debris across a wide area and triggering a major fire on the ground below.

The two aircraft involved were an Aérospatiale AS350B2 Écureuil (Euro copter) and a Bell 206B JetRanger III. According to aviation logs, one helicopter had departed from Angra dos Reis while the other was executing a flight from the nearby Jacarepaguá neighborhood.

At approximately 8:59 a.m. local time, the two aircraft struck each other at altitude. The force of the impact caused both helicopters to plummet instantly.

The Eurocopter exploded upon hitting the ground, plunging directly into the parking lot of a local car dealership that housed an array of electric vehicles. The impact ignited a massive blaze, heavily damaging or destroying roughly 20 cars. A massive column of thick, black smoke could be seen across the city for miles.

Lieutenant Colonel Fabio Contreiras, spokesman for Rio's Military Fire Department, highlighted the immense challenge responders faced: "When this type of battery [lithium-ion] catches fire, it releases highly toxic gases and intensifies both the temperature and severity of the blaze. Extinguishing a fire in one of these vehicles requires three to four times the amount of water needed for a standard car fire."

The Bell 206B helicopter did not catch fire but flipped entirely during its descent, landing upside down. Debris from both aircraft—including a tail section discovered on the roof of a nearby building—was scattered across a 100-meter radius.

There were no survivors from either aircraft. Investigators confirmed five people were aboard the Eurocopter, while the Bell 206B carried only its pilot.

The tragedy has sparked international grief following the confirmation of those on the flight manifest. The five victims aboard the Euro copter included American singer-songwriter Oliver Tree, Argentine streamer Gaspar "Gaspi" Prim, director Lucas A. Vignale, Brazilian music producer Lucas Brito Chaves, and pilot Alexandre Souza. Additionally, the sole occupant of the Bell 206B, Brazilian pilot Charles Marsillac, was confirmed among the deceased.

On the ground, witnesses described scenes of pure panic. Fernandes de Freitas, an employee at a nearby tire repair shop, recalled looking up right after the sound of the impact. "I saw one of the helicopters in flames following the midair collision," he said. "It was terrifying, absolutely horrifying." A local fast-food employee reported that the entire building shook as parts of the fracturing fuselages flew in all directions.

Officials from Brazil’s Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (CENIPA), along with local civil police, have secured the crash site. Investigators are currently reviewing radar records, communication data, and local security camera footage to determine how the two aircraft came to occupy the same flight path in clear, daylight conditions.
