Tragedy off Comino: 1 Dead, 2 Injured After Natural Rock Arch Collapses onto Passing Jet Ski

COMINO, MALTA — A serene Saturday evening turned into a scene of utter horror off the coast of Comino after a natural rock arch collapsed directly onto a passing jet ski, leaving one person dead and two others injured.

The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) confirmed that the freak accident occurred just after 7:00 PM on Saturday, June 27, 2026 near the popular Mediterranean island. What began as a routine summer evening on the water instantly shattered when a massive section of a coastal limestone arch suddenly gave way, plunging tons of rock into the sea below.

According to emergency responders, the driver of the jet ski bore the brunt of the impact. The catastrophic rockfall struck the watercraft directly, throwing its riders into the sea and trapping the driver beneath the heavy debris.

The AFM immediately deployed rescue vessels, alongside teams from the Gozo Command and the 3rd Regiment. After a tense search operation, military divers located the driver's body submerged beneath the collapsed rock. Emergency personnel confirmed that the individual showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other individuals were caught up in the disaster but managed to survive.

Eyewitnesses reported that a woman was riding pillion (as a passenger) on the Jet Ski at the time of the collapse. She was quickly pulled from the water by rescue teams, evacuated to nearby Mġarr Harbor, and rushed to Gozo General Hospital with injuries requiring urgent medical attention.

A second man was also injured during the incident. Reports suggest he had jumped into the sea from atop the rock structure just seconds before it gave way. He was picked up by a private vessel in the area and transported to the mainland with minor injuries.

The Civil Protection Department (CPD) remained on-site late into Saturday night to assist with recovery efforts and secure the area.

While Malta’s islands are world-renowned for their striking limestone coastal formations, the tragedy underscores the inherent dangers of natural erosion. The country's most famous natural arch, the Azure Window on neighboring Gozo, famously collapsed during a storm in 2017.

A magisterial inquiry has been officially launched to investigate the exact circumstances leading up to the structural failure and the ensuing tragedy. Authorities are urging all mariners and swimmers to exercise extreme caution when navigating near coastal cliffs and rock formations.
