SINGAPORE — A slick, rain-soaked stretch of Serangoon Road became the site of a fatal accident early Sunday morning when a car lost traction, skidded violently off the tarmac, and slammed into a roadside crash cushion.

Despite the rapid deployment of emergency personnel, the driver succumbed to severe impact injuries, marking another somber reminder of the hazards of navigating the city-state's roads during torrential downpours.

The accident occurred at approximately 6:15 AM on Sunday, May 17, 2026, along Serangoon Road, a major thoroughfare known for its heavy daytime traffic. At the time of the crash, the area was experiencing a steady, heavy rainfall that had left the asphalt highly slick with accumulated water and oil residue.

According to preliminary traffic police reports, a sedan was traveling along the wet road when the driver appeared to lose control while negotiating a slight bend. Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle aquaplane across the lanes before veering sharply toward the divider.

The car collided driver-side first into a steel crash cushion—a specialized safety barrier designed to absorb structural impacts—with immense force. The severity of the collision crumpled the entire front-right quadrant of the vehicle, trapping the driver within the compressed metal frame.

Passing motorists quickly dialed emergency services, bringing Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) paramedics and police to the scene within minutes.

Working under a relentless downpour, SCDF rescue personnel had to deploy specialized hydraulic rescue equipment—including cutters and spreaders—to pry open the crushed driver's side door and cut through the dashboard assembly to free the trapped motorist.

The 34-year-old male driver was extricated from the wreckage in an unconscious state. Despite paramedics immediately initiating CPR and advanced life support protocols on the tarmac, his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic.

Traffic Police cordoned off two lanes of Serangoon Road for several hours to conduct comprehensive forensic scene mapping and gather debris samples. Investigators are looking into whether excessive speed relative to the wet conditions, smooth tire treads, or a sudden braking maneuver triggered the fatal skid.

In the wake of the tragedy, road safety authorities have re-issued urgent advisories to motorists regarding the extreme dangers of wet-weather driving.

Authorities emphasize that heavy downpours can cause water to build up between tires and the road, leading to aquaplaning. To prevent this, motorists are strongly urged to reduce their travel speeds by 10–20 km/h below the legal limit, increase following distances for longer braking times, and regularly check tire tread depth to ensure adequate water displacement.
