Tragedy in San Diego: 5 Dead, Including 2 Teenage Gunmen, in Shocking Mosque Shooting

SAN DIEGO, California — A horrific mass shooting erupted outside the Islamic Center of San Diego (ICSD) on Monday, May 18, 2026 leaving three innocent victims dead before the two teenage perpetrators took their own lives. The attack, which took place in the Clairemont neighborhood, is being heavily investigated by local and federal authorities as a targeted hate crime.

The tragedy began unfolding hours before the shooting. At approximately 9:42 a.m., the San Diego Police Department received a frantic 911 call from the mother of one of the suspects. She reported that her 17-year-old son was suicidal, missing, dressed in camouflage, and had taken her car along with multiple firearms from the home.

Officers were actively tracking the missing teenager when a second wave of emergency calls shattered the peace at 11:43 a.m... Two heavily armed young men—identified by law enforcement as 17-year-old Cain Clark and 18-year-old Caleb Vazquez—had arrived at the mosque complex and opened fire.

Police arrived on the scene within four minutes, finding three adult men fatally shot outside the facility. At the same time, reports of active gunfire came from a few blocks away, where a landscaper was shot at from a vehicle but miraculously escaped injury after a bullet deflected off his helmet.

Shortly after, police discovered the two teenage suspects dead from self-inflicted gunshot wounds inside their vehicle parked half a mile away. No law enforcement officers discharged their weapons during the incident.

The Islamic Center of San Diego is the largest mosque in the county and houses a vibrant elementary day school. At the time of the attack, school was in session, and dozens of young children, teachers, and worshippers were inside the complex.

San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl credited the rapid intervention of an on-duty security guard with saving countless lives. The guard, identified by community members as Amin Abdulla—a father of eight—was among the three staff members killed outside the building.

"I think it’s fair to say [the guard’s] actions were heroic, and undoubtedly he saved lives today," Chief Wahl stated during a press briefing, noting that his efforts minimized the threat and kept the gunmen from breaching the interior doors.

Between 50 and 100 heavily armed law enforcement officers systematically breached the facility room by room to secure the perimeter and evacuate the building. All children and staff were safely accounted for, physically unharmed, and later reunited with their families at a nearby designated location.

Both the FBI and local homicide detectives are treating the shooting as a suspected hate crime. Law enforcement officials revealed that a suicide note left by one of the suspects contained explicit references to "racial pride," and hate-filled rhetoric was found scrawled directly onto one of the semi-automatic firearms used in the assault.

As the community reels from the shock, religious and political leaders across the country have expressed deep solidarity with the local Muslim community.

"Our Islamic center is a place of worship. People come to pray, to celebrate, to learn," said Imam Taha Hassane, director of the ICSD, his voice heavy with grief. "It is extremely outrageous to target a place of worship... It is a house of worship. It’s not a battlefield."

The mosque has announced it will remain closed until further notice as the investigation continues and the community begins a long, painful process of mourning and recovery.
