DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Torrential rains on Monday evening, May 18, 2026 triggered sudden, severe flash floods in parts of Mindanao, forcing more than 200 families to flee their homes in Barangay Matina Pangi, Davao City.
The heavy downpour, which intensified into the night, rapidly swelled local river channels and low-lying zones, prompting local disaster officials to execute emergency forced evacuations as water levels hit critical thresholds.
Families were caught in a race against time as floodwaters rapidly inundated residential compounds. Emergency sirens sounded across the barangay, signaling immediate danger and sending rescue teams—including local responders and the Philippine National Police (PNP)—into the flooded streets to assist vulnerable residents, children, and the elderly.
Displaced residents were quickly transported to designated evacuation centers, including the barangay gymnasium, to ensure their safety through the worst of the deluge.
The Philippine National Police has since placed its regional and local units on high alert. PNP officials confirmed they are closely coordinating with local government units (LGUs) and disaster response teams to manage the ongoing situation.
"Our personnel on the ground have been instructed to tightly coordinate rescue and relief operations to prevent casualties and ensure an orderly response," local police authorities stated on Tuesday morning.
Barangay Matina Pangi has historically been prone to flash floods, rendering it a focal point for the city’s disaster risk reduction initiatives. Thanks to heightened community awareness and the rapid deployment of localized early warning systems, early reports indicate zero casualties from Monday night's emergency.
As of Tuesday morning, local disaster risk reduction and management offices (CDRRMO) are monitoring water levels while social welfare personnel begin assessing the needs of the displaced families. Residents are urged to remain vigilant as unpredictable weather patterns continue to pose flood and landslide risks across the region.
