KUWAIT CITY — A devastating residential fire broke out in the Sabah Al-Ahmad area early Tuesday, May 12, 2026, leaving five people injured and a family home in ruins. Emergency services worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, which threatened to spread to neighboring properties in the densely populated district.
The fire reportedly started in the ground floor of a two-story villa before quickly sweeping through the upper levels. Thick plumes of black smoke were visible across the skyline as first responders arrived on the scene.
The fire spread rapidly, fueled by high winds and residential materials that allowed the flames to engulf primary living areas within minutes. In response, Kuwait Fire Force (KFF) teams from several nearby stations were dispatched immediately to combat the inferno and perform critical search-and-rescue operations for any trapped occupants.
Medical officials confirmed that five individuals were rescued from the building and treated by paramedics on-site before being transported to a specialized burns unit. Two victims currently remain in critical condition within the intensive care unit, suffering from severe smoke inhalation and third-degree burns. Meanwhile, the remaining three victims are being treated for minor burns and respiratory distress and are currently listed in stable condition.
Firefighters faced intense heat and structural instability as they entered the home to ensure no one else remained inside. One firefighter was treated on-site for heat exhaustion but returned to duty shortly after. By the time the blaze was fully extinguished, the interior of the residence had sustained near-total damage.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the KFF’s Accident Investigation Department. Early assessments suggest a potential electrical short circuit in the home’s main power board, though officials have not yet released a final report.
"This is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly a domestic fire can turn into a tragedy," said a spokesperson for the local emergency services. "We urge all residents to regularly inspect their electrical wiring and ensure that smoke detectors are functional."
Neighbors in Sabah Al-Ahmad have already begun organizing support efforts for the displaced family, who lost most of their belongings in the fire. Local authorities are also providing temporary housing assistance as the investigation continues.
