MANGALDAN, Pangasinan — What was meant to be a routine delivery turned fatal on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, when a 52-year-old truck driver was electrocuted while attempting to clear low-hanging power lines that were blocking his vehicle's path in Barangay Bateng, Mangaldan.
The victim died at the scene despite emergency response efforts.
According to the Mangaldan Municipal Police Station, the driver was navigating his cargo truck through a local road in Barangay Bateng when he encountered sagged electrical wires draped precariously across the street. Realizing his truck was too tall to clear the obstruction safely, the driver opted to park the vehicle and resolve the issue himself.
Armed with the intent to lift or move the low-hanging lines out of the way, the driver approached the cables. Unbeknownst to him, the lines carried a live electrical current. The moment he made physical contact with the wires, a massive electrical surge shot through his body, rendering him instantly unconscious and causing fatal injuries.
Witnesses and local residents rushed to render aid and immediately contacted emergency responders, but the high-voltage shock proved fatal, and the driver was pronounced dead on the spot.
The tragedy has prompted both law enforcement and local utility providers to issue urgent public safety reminders regarding sagging utility lines. Officials strongly advise motorists—especially those operating large commercial trucks and heavy machinery—never to handle downed or low-hanging wires under any circumstances.
"If a vehicle's path is obstructed by utility lines, drivers should remain inside the vehicle or at a safe distance and immediately contact the local power cooperative or emergency services to handle the situation," a local safety official noted.
Authorities are currently coordinating with the local electric cooperative to inspect the area, tension the sagged lines, and ensure that no further hazards exist for residents and passing motorists in Barangay Bateng. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending the notification of his immediate family.
