BEIRUT, Lebanon — Southern and eastern Lebanon reeled under one of the heaviest days of bombardment in weeks as a fresh wave of Israeli air strikes killed at least 31 people and wounded 40 others. The rapid escalation has thrown a fragile, U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement into jeopardy as military operations widen significantly.

The intensified assault followed a declaration by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who announced that Israel is "deepening" ground operations and expanding its campaign against Hezbollah. According to Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health, the strikes pummeled multiple towns and villages on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, tearing through residential areas and triggering panic.

The single deadliest strike flattened structures in the Burj El Shemali area near the southern coastal city of Tyre. Local health authorities confirmed that 14 people lost their lives—including women and children—and 16 others were injured in that attack alone.

Further east, Lebanese state media reported at least three air raids striking near the Qaraoun Dam, the country’s largest water reservoir. In total, the Israeli military launched more than 120 air strikes within a 24-hour window, targeting what it claims are Hezbollah assets and infrastructure.

The aerial blitz coincided with an aggressive push on the ground. Israeli military officials confirmed that troops have begun pushing past the "Yellow Line"—a boundary demarcated roughly 10 kilometers deep inside Lebanese territory.

Hezbollah forces retaliated by launching artillery shells, rockets, and explosive drones aimed at disrupting advancing Israeli columns near the strategic Litani River. Early Wednesday morning, rocket sirens echoed across northern Israel as cross-border projectiles were fired from Lebanon, though the Israeli military reported they landed harmlessly in open areas.

This latest bloodshed threatens to fully unravel a U.S.-brokered ceasefire that initially took effect on April 16. Despite a 45-day extension agreed upon by both nations on May 15 to facilitate ongoing peace talks, continuous cross-border violence has left the truce effectively unrecognizable.

Netanyahu’s vows to heavily penalize Hezbollah for recent drone attacks sparked immediate panic in Lebanon. Following his remarks, gridlock locked the streets of Beirut’s southern suburbs as thousands of families packed their cars to flee anticipated strikes.

Since Israel expanded its offensive on March 2, the conflict has exacted a catastrophic toll, claiming nearly 3,200 lives, injuring over 9,600, and displacing more than 1.6 million people across Lebanon.
